Text: Deuteronomy 7:1-6

Below is a Cause and Effect diagram of today’s text. It is a picture of the four actions the Lord will both do and/or empower, “When the Lord your God…” (Deuteronomy 7:1, 2) and the desired effect, “then you must…” (Deuteronomy 7:2). Notice that there is no doubt in what God will do; the question was whether Israel would do their part.

A New Testament cause and effect is seen in the Gospel of Luke as the Lord gave “instruction” to Peter before Peter even knew he needed the admonition. It was an instruction that concerned a battle he never thought possible to lose: “but I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. And when (emphasis mine) you have turned again, strengthen your brothers” (Luke 22:32 ESV). Peter was able to strengthen his brethren; in fact, he was devoted to it, after a tearful repentance. Let it be known: A person who is tested is a person who is really able to help others, even if they have stumbled along the way.

Today you may be as Israel, standing on the brink of your inheritance; yet, standing in the way of your promises are seven “nations” more powerful than you. Maybe today you are as Peter and have lost a battle you never imagined you would lose. Regardless, it is a day to become consecrated; it is a day to become devoted. It is your day to be committed to follow Him either as Israel and devote to destruction or as Peter and to repent and strengthen. Do it…in Jesus name!
