Text: Joshua 10:1-15

Warren Wiersbe writes in his commentary Be Strong, “The Book of Joshua is the book of new beginnings for the people of God, and many believers today need a new beginning. After forty years of wandering in the wilderness, Israel claimed their inheritance and enjoyed the blessings of the land that God had prepared for them, ‘as the days of heaven upon the earth’ (Deut. 11:21). That’s the kind of life God wants us to experience today.”

He continues by listing six features of Joshua’s life that prepared him to lead in the battle for his inheritance: Joshua was born a slave in Egypt and saw all the wonders of God’s delivering power; he was a soldier, his first official recorded act was the defeat of the Amalikites (Exodus 17:8-16); he was a servant, “And Moses rose up, and his minister Joshua: and Moses went up into the mount of God” (Exodus 24:13 KJV); he was one of the 12 spies, but was not afraid to stand against the majority to stand with God; he was the successor of Moses; and he was unselfish, as Joshua was the last to received his share of the conquered land (Joshua 19:49-51).

We may not have all the unique features of a Joshua; yet, we can still hold the key to his strength and success—faith in the Word of God. “Every word of God proves true; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him” (Proverbs 30:5 ESV); “But he [Jesus] said, ‘Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!’” (Luke 11:28 ESV).

Thank the Lord today for His Word and through it the victories that will be won. Pray Ephesians 1:3, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places” and believe for your liberty in defeating those strongholds devoted to destruction.
