Text: Matthew 28:5-15
Yesterday we saw where Mary Magdalene was the first to see Jesus following His resurrection. It must be remembered that it was a woman to whom Jesus first revealed His messiah-ship (cf. John 4: 25-26). Now we see that the second “sighting” is by the group of women who had days before stood by Him at the cross.
I don’t think it is any coincidence that these women, who were near the Lord when He suffered, were also the first to see Him glorified. Such reminds me of Paul’s words to Timothy, “If we suffer, we shall also reign with him…”(2 Timothy 2:12 KJV). But in this promise also comes the paradox of emotions Matthew shared about the women, “And they departed quickly from the sepulchre with fear and great joy; and did run to bring his disciples word” (Matthew 28:8 KJV).
Robertson writes, “They [the women] had the greatest piece of news that it was possible to have. Mark calls it fear and ecstasy. Anything seemed possible now. Mark even says that at first they told no one anything for they were afraid (cf. Mark 16:8). Thankfully the women overcame their fear and shared the news with the disciples, but it does offer us encouragement that when we may be afraid to speak even when filled with great joy!
Pray for strength to speak what you know to be true about Jesus—He is alive and wants to save. Look for opportunities to speak encouragement to those around you; and be confident knowing that He is with you.
